The surface depicts a garden moving from dense, heavily shadowed foliage at the base of the vessel towards lighter, more open growth as it rises. Thick layers of leaves and plants gradually give way to flowers and new growth reaching upwards into the light. The piece combines slip trailing and detailed hand painting to create contrasting areas of raised texture, pattern and colour. The layered surface gives the foliage a sense of depth and movement, encouraging the viewer to explore the vessel from different angles. Hidden amongst the leaves and flowers are small insects and frogs, creating moments of discovery within the garden. These creatures are deliberately tucked into the foliage, inviting the viewer to look closely and discover the life concealed within the shadows. The vessel reflects my love of hand-building, surface texture and hand painting, together with my fascination with gardens, plants and flowers. While Nicola works across a range of ceramic techniques, hand building remains central to her practice. She creates both functional and sculptural forms, embracing the organic qualities and possibilities of working directly with clay. Her work is distinguished by highly detailed hand-painted imagery, with colour, pattern and texture used to bring each piece to life. Gardens, plants and nature are recurring influences, reflecting Nicola’s fascination with the beauty, abundance and intricate detail found in the natural environment. Her love of travel and photography is also increasingly finding its way into her work, with photographs and observations gathered from both local surroundings and overseas journeys beginning to inform her imagery, surface decoration and storytelling.

Collection or delivery.

This item is part of the Plant Empire Garden Art Exhibition, on display at Plant Empire from 17 October - 22 November 2026. All but one of approximately 36 species of Christmas Beetles (family Scarabaeidae) are unique (endemic) to Australia, but over the last 30 years their population numbers have dwindled drastically. My works are little memories, imprints of my time in nature, the details that often go unseen. Since completing a Design degree at the College of Fine Arts (now UNSW Art and Design), I have traveled extensively and explored the natural environment of Australia and New Zealand. While in Perth, I worked with Angela Mellor whose paper clay technique allowed me to imprint nature's patterns and was instrumental to the evolution of my work. My ongoing volunteer work in bush regeneration has informed my art practice with a strong environmental focus and an underpinning belief that nature is the ultimate designer. I use a combination of slip-casting and handbuilding techniques that allow me to make multiples with unique textures and ensure the bone china is thin enough to be translucent when lit. Light is important to my work, drawing us into a world of wonder and awe where we remember humanity's deep connection with nature.

Collection or delivery.

This item is part of the Plant Empire Garden Art Exhibition, on display at Plant Empire from 17 October - 22 November 2026. The pieces I create always include some form of texture, pattern or decorative 3D sculptural elements created using fabric, ceramic tools, stamps, and cutters. I also love colour which is always carefully thought out and incorporated into my work. Most pieces make use of underglazes, commercial crystal glazes and usually a combination of gloss and matte clear glaze to finish the pieces. I love to make items that are unique, one-of-a-kind, sometimes quirky and unusual, but always different. As they are hand-built, no two pieces are ever the same. I have worked in art in some capacity, whether full-time, part-time or as a hobbyist, since the 1990s exploring painting, textile art, mosaics and ceramics.

Collection or delivery.

This item is part of the Plant Empire Garden Art Exhibition, on display at Plant Empire from 17 October - 22 November 2026. Composed of layered, hand-formed marks arranged within a diamond orientation, the piece draws the eye inward—from deep, anchoring blues at the edges to turquoise to pale white—evoking water, sky, and breath, and reinforcing themes of calm, introspection, and clarity. Ultimately, this piece is about transition, between dark and light, exterior and interior, stillness and motion. It offers a quiet space for reflection, encouraging viewers to consider what lies beneath the surface and to find their own centre within shifting layers of experience. Constructed entirely from recycled and reclaimed clay, the sculpture mimics the density and chaotic architecture of informal settlements and rapidly built emergency housing. The physical structure features micro-habitations, meticulously stacked, interlocking, and spilling over one another. The core of the narrative is activated through a stark, single-source light positioned low to the ground. As the light shines on the structures, it casts monumental, distorted shadows across the garden. These shadows stretch the tiny, precarious dwellings into soaring, monolithic skyscrapers. This interplay between light and dark creates an intentional illusion: the physical vulnerability of the small, temporary homes stands in sharp contrast to the massive, haunting presence of their shadows. "Transient Silhouettes" asks the viewer to reflect on who remains visible and who is reduced to a shadow in our fast-moving world.

About the artist.

Juliet van Oirschot is a ceramicist based on the beautiful Gold Coast, Queensland, land of the Yugambeh people. By stacking, carving, and transforming the earth itself on a human scale, these structural pillars reflect both the physical topography of the landscape and the psychological landscapes of change, memory, and time. The glass-like, reflective surfaces of the high-gloss glazes act as active participants in the physical architecture, catching the light sharply, bouncing brilliant reflections off the edges. As the eye moves toward the sky, undulating curves where the liquid-like glaze mimics the fluid depth, sheen, and rhythmic motion of coastal waters. By distilling these vast environments into contrasting tonal and textural relationships on a singular vertical axis, the work invites viewers to pause at the intersections of permanence and impermanence. Moving dynamically across the carved, spherical shape of the earth, the Maori guardian spirit acts as a protective force navigating the vast currents of the world, bridging ancient cultural narratives with contemporary global dialogue. The interplay of shadow and light serves as a vital storytelling element in the physical structure of the piece. As light strikes the surface, the deeply carved, fluid scales and serpentine form of the Taniwha catch sharp highlights, creating a vivid sense of undulating motion against the contours of the globe. By distilling this powerful narrative onto a singular, intimate vertical axis, the sculpture invites viewers to observe the world from a vantage point of reverence and protection. My art is informed by my indoor and outdoor environment. I have been inspired by nature and my surroundings my entire life. As a child, I would observe with great curiosity and wonder the beauty and intricacy of plants, flowers and wild life and even my grandmother's retro kitchen, embracing the dance of light bouncing around certain scenes. I enjoy exploring my neighbourhood and home, taking photos for my catalogue of inspiration and reference. I then use these snapshots of time in my studio where my concepts come to life through paint and pigment and multimedia. I’m an oil painter and I sculpt with upcycled glass. I have bipolar disorder along with fibromyalgia which is a chronic illness causing widespread pain and extreme fatigue. I create in short bursts allowing time to rest in between my art, this is why I mostly enjoy painting in oils and creating in glass as they take a long time

Collection or delivery.

This item is part of the Plant Empire Garden Art Exhibition, on display at Plant Empire from 17 October - 22 November 2026.
