In this artwork, I've explored how, if we were to visually remove the Leafy Seadragon from its habitat and place it on a blank background, it goes from being something essentially unseen, to a marvel of magnificent leafy appendages and incredible structures that demand the viewer's attention. The creature becomes a figure that draws our eye instead of blending into the background. I have, however, left a hint of our main subject's marine home, by placing a silhouette of a second Seadragon behind like a shadow. This silhouette is comprised of elements of the Seadragon's habitat, such as the kelp and seaweed that it relies on to survive and stay hidden from predators. In this way, I am inviting the viewer to consider the relationship between our main subject and its home.

About the artist.

Ingrid Bartkowiak is an artist and illustrator who works primarily in watercolour. Inspired by botanical illustration and the arts and crafts movement, Ingrid’s technique makes use of the watercolour medium through tiny patterns, exquisite detail, and vivid blocks of colour. Since graduating from the Queensland College of Art in 2019, Ingrid has worked on a diverse range of art projects, including picture book illustration, murals, packaging designs and even pet portraits. It is possibly not the most glorious creature, but it is a worldly representation of my inner me. Each spike and cocoon are little representations of the many responsibilities that I carry: parenting, family, social interactions, future uncertainties, and health. Thoughts and feelings are brought onto me by all the joy and challenges that life has to offer.

Planning and executing this exhibition piece has enabled me to take full advantage of creative freedom and by pushing beyond my comfort zone. I wanted to create a piece that challenged my technical abilities and that stepped out of a levelled state into an organic flow and warped shape. My intention was also to create a core body that would allow me to heavily decorate and explore as many glaze and finishing options as I desire.

There was no other option in mind other than using this deep rich red terracotta for this project. It’s earthy, smooth texture is a dream to work with: a type of clay which been used by humans since ancient times, with its history deeply intertwined with human civilization. The Last Supper is known to us only through written accounts and Da Vinci’s celebrated painting, although without cameras, photos, or social media, no one today can say what it truly looked like. This artwork explores that space between documented history and the countless moments that were never recorded. The piece began as a vintage alabaster sculpture that was plain, monochrome, and traditionally solemn. I repurposed and hand-painted the entire work, bringing colour, humour, and warmth to a scene that is usually depicted with strict reverence. In my reimagining, Jesus and his disciples trade their robes for bright, patterned oodies. They gather not in rigid formality but in the relaxed familiarity of a late-night hangout, sharing simple food and leaning into the same comforting messiness that we associate with modern sleepovers. Handmade clay UNO cards and rule book added to the tabletop, transforming this historic moment into something instantly recognisable and relatable. By blending contemporary playfulness with a revered religious image, this piece encourages viewers to consider how much of history is constructed from interpretation rather than reality. If the Last Supper had been captured today, perhaps it would resemble a candid snapshot of friends laughing, debating, teasing, and competing over a card game. The Last Sleepover honours the unseen humanity behind the legend, reminding us that even the most iconic stories belonged to real people in unrecorded, unfiltered moments.

About the artist.

Jacqui Burnell is a Brisbane-based self-taught artist whose practice spans painting, functional art, and imaginative creations using air-dry clay and ceramics. This small clay sculpture, viewed through the fixed frame of a ship’s porthole, captures a traveller poised for a perfect selfie: her body is present, but her attention is elsewhere. The ocean stretches behind her as a vast and extraordinary world, yet remains unseen. Instead, her focus is on curating a moment for the camera and constructing a memory she may never fully inhabit. Unseen “wish you were here… I’m not” explores the tension between globalisation and digitisation: we cross oceans with ease, yet increasingly encounter life through screens, filters, and devices that promise connection but often obscure the real experience. The porthole becomes a metaphor for both opportunity and confinement, while the phone becomes a second window that distances her from the very world she documents. She has trained at the Brisbane Institute of Art and TAFE, focussing on drawing and figurative painting. Her current sculptural focus began after attending a fibre art workshop about a decade ago. Inspired by the possibilities of merging her love of nature and her interest in texture, fabric, form and line, Megan has developed a unique and sustainable practice. With a background as medical doctor, Megan brings a deep understanding of the human condition and the need for stillness and restoration. The general population are in a tight knit circle, touching each other, sheltering each other, with conforming shapes, size and colour. Then on the outside of the group is a baby in a tight ball, a small child and a person who is hunched over, sitting down. They are all on the outside of the circle, not included, in drab grey, with the word "unseen" stamped into them. The world is often a challenging place to reside, so spending time in dreamlike states and other worlds appeals to me as a form of escapism. This work symbolises an alternative world where all things are possible and mermaids are real. One only has to choose which reality provides the richest of human experiences and I firmly choose to live just outside of most peoples' reality. She is visible—illuminated, present, undeniable against the bold, hot pink, background in the painting; yet the absence of her face, conveys a disconnect between being seen and being truly recognised. I wanted the hot pink to feel like noise in a world that is loud, busy, and attention-grabbing, while she remains turned away, her voice implied but not received. The purple tones of her skin carry emotion beneath the surface: thought, feeling, and depth—everything that often goes unheard. She holds something important, but the space around her doesn’t pause long enough to listen. There’s a quiet resistance in her posture: whe isn’t performing or demanding attention, she simply is. Presence should be enough to be acknowledged, yet so often it isn’t, so its lack of recognition becomes less about absence and more about being overlooked in plain sight—a powerful reflection on how voices today can exist clearly, thoughtfully, and even beautifully, yet still not be acted upon.

About the artist.

Fran Melton is an artist who seeks to inspire others through her use of colours, bringing a sense of peace and connection to people and nature. Inspired by the Nereids of Greek mythology—the sea nymphs who guided sailors, guarded hidden realms, and embodied the ocean’s shifting moods, she carries the presence of those ancient, unseen guardians. Her form is interlaced with shells, coral, and strands of kelp, echoing the fragile ecosystems she protects. My practice explores the expressive possibilities of paper clay through both hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. I am drawn to the material’s capacity for delicacy and detail, shaping it into botanical forms, mythic figures, and nature-inspired pieces that sit between sculpture and ornament. I have exhibited in several local community art shows, including Ceramic Arts Queensland’s annual Elemental exhibitions, and the Redcliffe Pottery Group’s annual Clay on Display exhibitions. In 2022, the Museum of Brisbane acquired my piece ‘Jacaranda’ for its Commune permanent collection. In 2025, I collaborated with Earth Water Fire Ceramic Artist Collective’s 'Feminine Facets of Form' which featured sculptural busts and figurines from my flower nymph series.

Collection or delivery.

This item is part of the Plant Empire Small Wonders Exhibition 2026, on display from 9 May - 7 June. Deeply connected to both countries, she returns regularly to New Zealand to reconnect with family and re-immerse herself in its distinctive terrain. This lived experience of belonging to two homelands shapes her enduring fascination with how landscapes and built environments hold memory, identity, and feeling. Originally trained as an interior designer, Kelly has designed spaces that shape how people live and experience their surroundings. This foundation gave her a lasting sensitivity to the relationship between environment and emotion and an awareness that now informs her painting practice. With a designer's eye for structure and story, her paintings showcase old buildings such as corner stores and Queenslander homes just before they are altered, relocated, or demolished.

Collection or delivery.

This item is part of the Plant Empire Small Wonders Exhibition 2026, on display from 9 May - 7 June. I've had a vivid imagination and have been drawing and painting ever since I can remember. Since leaving school, I have studied Illustration, fashion design, silversmithing, watercolour and pattern design and I've been continually exploring the multifaceted world of art. Working with watercolour for smaller illustrative pieces and acrylic for larger works, my style is a mix of surrealism, abstract and fantasy. I'm always taking inspiration from the unseen world and exploring themes of spirituality, folklore, energy and nature.
