House & Garden Triptych Workshop (9–10 April 2022)
House & Garden Triptych: 2-day Intensive Workshop with Jane du Rand, 9-5pm 9–10 April
This is the first of a series of two-day intensive workshops led by Jane du Rand at Plant Empire in 2022. Immerse yourself in ceramics for a full weekend in April and learn from an internationally renowned artist to make a triptych of multi-layered reliefs depicting house and garden scenes that are special to you.
A “relief” in art is a 3-dimensional sculpture that sits against a solid base or backing, as if rising from formlessness into form. Reliefs made from clay form an essential part of Jane du Rand’s ceramic and mosaic art, allowing her to combine ceramics and mosaics in unique ways that provide scale and life to her work. Jane’s house reliefs were the focus of her 2021 "Living in Ipswich" exhibition at the Ipswich Art Gallery and are a celebration of Queensland exteriors and the people that inhabit their interiors.
In this special workshop held over two days, you will learn from Jane du Rand to design and create a series of three house and/or garden reliefs using clay. Each relief in your triptych can be made to the same size or in three different sizes to suit your design and how you’d like them displayed. Finished pieces will be minimally decorated with oxides and stains and kiln-fired, and can be used as wall art inside or outside the home. Your house relief will be a beautiful and unique talking piece and would make a special gifts for loved ones.
In preparation for the workshop, please bring along three images of a house (interior or exterior), garden or a scene that you would like to re-create for your reliefs. You can combine elements from more than one image to personalise your relief and tell a more detailed story with artistic licence, such as adding people, pets or plants in flower. Ideally, print two sizes of each image, one with the image filling an A4 page and another filling an A3 page, to enable you to scale your image and add fine details to your finished work. You can also draw or paint your own scene to create as a relief: for best results, be sure to maximise the level of detail and perspective with objects at near, middle, and far distances, as these will form the layers to each relief.
We will spend two full days working out the layers for each relief, making a ceramic box frame and carving all the details on the different layers which will make up the whole image. You will learn slab building techniques, clay carving techniques, and how to make your own specialised carving tools to achieve particular effects.
