Junior Masterclass with Jane du Rand: 9–5pm (11–18 January 2023).

Jane du Rand's Junior Masterclass is back for the summer holidays! Drop your kids off at Plant Empire in January for 6 days of full-day art and nature activities designed to switch off devices and switch on creativity and engagement with the outside world.

Just like the adults' Masterclass, kids will will learn how to paint, create ceramics and mosaics and produce a full professional art installation featuring ceramics and mosaics, to be installed at the Station Road Creative Precinct at Yeerongpilly on permanent display. Kids will leave a large installation behind, but take home with them moulds of ceramic plants and animals that they can re-use for future creations.

Jane du Rand's ceramic and mosaic art combines a range of technical and artistic skills to bring the natural world to life within urban environments. It is this approach that she brings to this new children’s art class program.

Each day, children will learn new artistic skills around a central theme that encourages children to appreciate beauty and life in the world around them. The art theme for this art camp will be Knowing our native sea creatures, which children will explore through step-by-step exercises in mediums that include drawing, painting, ceramics, sculptures, and mosaics. Kids will also undertake walks and cultural excursions designed to enhance their learning experience and to deliver exhausted bodies back to parents at the end of the day. This year's Junior Masterclass group will enjoy a special wildlife excursion to Sea World to experience real live sea animals for the children to see, touch and get to know (ticket included in registration fee).

The daily program for this art camp includes:

Wednesday 11 January: Painting and Drawing.

  • In the morning, we take a trip to Redliffe to walk along the foreshore to look for birds and sea creatures see how beachside plants grow and collect ideas and drawings for making our ceramic leaves and sculptures for our mural.
  • In the afternoon, we draw large-scale birds, sea animals and plants based on our field sketches and transfer our drawings onto the mural panels.

Thursday 12 January: Clay making.

  • In the morning, we create ceramic sea creatures, birds and plants in clay based on our drawings.
  • Afterwards, we create moulds from our ceramic pieces in order to make many more pieces for our mural.
  • In the afternoon, we learn about the impact of plastics on sea creatures as part of a fun game and work on a group story that we could tell through our art.

Friday 13 January: Wildlife Excursion & Making.

  • In the morning, we visit Sea World to meet the water animals there for us to look at and touch if we want to. We will learn about how these animal live in the wild and what people can do to help protect their natural environments.

  • In the afternoon, we create animals out of mosaics and ceramics based on our drawings of the morning's visitors.

Monday 16 January: Glazing & Sculptures.

  • In the morning, we glaze our animal and plants tiles and load them into the kiln for firing.
  • Afterwards, we form small groups and plan a stop-motion animation on paper (storyboard) with our ceramic pieces as characters and a message about conservation.
  • In the afternoon, we will work on our group mosaic mural.

Tuesday 17 January: Installation & Presentation.

  • In the morning, we will produce our stop-motion conservation movies.
  • In the afternoon, we will work to finish our group mosaics and present and discuss the animations to our classmates.

Wednesday 18 January: Installation & Presentation.

  • In the morning, we grout our mosaics and start attaching all our ceramics and mosaics that we made during the week to our mural.
  • Afterwards, we clean the grout, continue attaching decorative pieces and touch up painting.
  • In the afternoon, we install the panels on the wall and make finishing touches to the installation.
  • Finally, we reveal the finished installation to our friends and family and sit back to enjoy our work over a cool drink.
