Kids Art Class with Jane du Rand: 4:30–6pm Fridays (14 October – 2 December 2022).

Jane du Rand’s ceramics and mosaic art combine a range of technical and artistic skills to bring the natural world to life within urban environments, and it is this approach that she aims to bring to her new children’s art class program.

Each week, children will learn new artistic skills around a central theme that encourages children to appreciate beauty and life in the world around them. For this term's program, the art theme will be Australian native homes: trees and the animals that live in them, which children will explore through step-by-step exercises in mediums that include drawing, painting, ceramics and sculptures. The 8-week program will teach the following art skills:

Week 1: Drawing - we visit a special tree garden, the Sherwood Arboretum, to look at the trees and even more closely at the animals that live in them and learn how to draw them.
Week 2: Relief making. We create flat/relief tiles in clay based on our drawings.
Week 3: Painting. We paint our relief tiles using underglazes.
Week 4: Sculpture making. We sculpt 3-dimensional trees and animals using clay.
Week 5: Mosaics. We make mosaic creatures using a ceramic frame made by Jane.
Week 6: Painting. We paint the bisque-fired 3D trees and animals that we made in week 4.
Week 7: Grouting. We grout the mosaics that we made in week 5 and make a mosaic surround for our relief tiles made in week 2.
Week 8: Presentation. We grout our tree and animal ceramic/mosaic pieces and present all our finished pieces as a group exhibition.

Jane is passionate about working with children and teaching them how to use art to engage with the world around them in creative ways. As a successful professional artist, trained architect, and avid nature lover, Jane’s lessons combine art, technique and nature in a welcoming and supportive learning environment. She has developed and delivered numerous international children’s art programs over the last three decades, including regular workshops, school-based art projects, and community art installations.

Jane's weekly art classes for term 4 align with the Queensland school curriculum, starting on Thursday 14 October (week 2 of term 4) and running for 8 weeks until 2 December. This class is aimed at children 8-13 years of age; however, children slightly younger or older are welcome to attend with siblings. All tools and materials for the classes are included in the course fee, along with kiln-firing of ceramic pieces. In the event of a lockdown, materials will be collected by parents or delivered to students and classes will be delivered online using webinar software.
