Life Drawing Class with Cherryl Leigh: 6–9pm Tuesday (Fortnightly).

In this regular Tuesday evening class, held fortnightly from 24 May 2022, you will learn from artist Cherryl Leigh how to draw the human body.

The human body is a challenging subject matter for artists: it requires particular technical skills, and an ability to work quickly with living subject matter (this is no still life!). Cherryl's goals for this class are to develop your skills, your eye, and your confidence in approaching life drawing. You will find it may also help develop your appreciation of the human body and in the beauty of life itself.

This class uses professional life drawing models, who will vary from class to class with a focus on diversity. You can register to join either the Tutored or Untutored group, depending on your level of skill and whether you'd like to receive instruction or work unguided.

Tutored and Untutored Groups

Tutored Group: Guided Sessions for Beginners.

Students at all levels of drawing or art experience are welcome to join the tutored group. All materials and equipment for tutored students will be supplied. Classes for this group are led by Cherryl Leigh and designed to give students an introduction to the basics of life drawing approaches and techniques.

The format for tutored classes will generally involve a series of short warm-up exercises to get you used to working quickly, followed by longer semi-structured exercises with positive peer feedback to develop your skills in key techniques such as proportion and foreshortening. Exercises will be different each week and respond to student's individual learning needs.

Untutored Group: Unstructured Sessions for Advanced Students.

Students who have experience in life drawing at an intermediate or advanced level are welcome to join the untutored group. For beginners, we recommend that you undertake at least three tutored sessions to gain the basics of life drawing before joining the untutored group. Untutored students should bring their own drawing materials, paper and equipment, including an easel, although we will have tables and a few easels available if you forget. We will be working in a large workshop space, allowing you plenty of room to work without distraction from the tutored group.

Class Protocols

Cherryl will outline class protocols with both tutored and untutored students at the start of every class, to help set new students at ease and establish clear etiquette and rules for everyone in the class. Students are not permitted to approach the model during the session and are not permitted to touch the model, or their posing platform, props and belongings. Students are expected to be respectful to everyone in the room and refrain from negative comments toward or about the model. The room will be closed to anyone other than class participants during each session. Photography and mobile phones are not permitted during sessions (although students may take calls outside, if necessary). Students who break these rules will be asked to leave the class.

About Cherryl Leigh (nee Baker)

From the age of 15 art is all that I wanted to do. From school, I went straight on to study Visual Arts at the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba, focusing on developing my drawing and painting skills. Later, I returned to TAFE to study ceramics and was extremely lucky to gain employment in a production art and ceramic studio. For 14 years, I immersed myself in creating art for and with Monte Lupo artists, mentoring and supporting artists living with disabilities develop their skills and their unique expression through art. I love all forms of art and the variety of ways one can express themselves through every type of medium. For me, art is a vehicle for communication, for healing and for bringing joy to my soul and hopefully to others as well.
