Plant Pests to Best Plants - Talk with Stephen Flood (1–2:30pm Sunday 17 July)

Everyone who grows plants will at some point have to deal with plant pests. From mealy bugs, to spider mites, ants and grasshoppers, understanding your enemy is the key to success.

Join us for this talk with expert grower and horticulturist Stephen Flood to learn all about common plant pests: why they appear; how to avoid them if you can;, and how to deal with them if you can't.

This talk will cover:

  • Understanding how the growing environment impacts on plant health and how to maximise the conditions for best plant health.
  • How to reduce and respond to plant pests and pathogens.
  • Understanding the biology and ecology of common pests, including chewing, sucking, rasping and burrowing pests.
  • Understanding more about common pests including: mealy bugs, spider mites, fungus gnats, scale, powdery mildew, black sooty mould, ants, grasshoppers, bush turkeys, and any other pests you'd like to know about.
  • Managing physical damage to plants from extremes of heat, sunburn, frost, water
  • Environmentally safe treatments for common plant pests (plus a few dynamite solutions when the balance has turned against you).

This talk is suitable for the curious beginner and experienced indoor gardeners. The formal talk will be approximately 1 hour in length, followed by 30 minutes of questions from participants, so please feel free to bring along a question, photo or miserable plant for Steve to solve (please only bring diseased plants in a bag!).

Participants are welcome to join in person or join online via webinar: choose from one of these two options when registering. If you have selected the option to join online, you will be sent a link via email to login to the presentation online on the day before the talk's start time (for this reason, please ensure that you include your email address when registering). You will also need to select the "in-store pickup" option for delivery if you are joining online. We will have a moderator who will field questions for Steve from people who are joining online. Coffee and light food will be available for purchase for those attending in person.
