Propagating Plants Talk (12 June 2022)
Propagating Plants - Talk with Stephen Flood (1–2:30pm Sunday 12 June)
Is it true that the only things better than plants are free plants? If you've ever experienced the deep satisfaction of growing new plants from bits of existing plants, the answer is yes! Join us for this talk with expert grower and horticulturist Stephen Flood to learn all the basics of propagating plants, including hands-on practice and lots of freshly propagated plant babies to take home.
This talk will focus on vegetative propagation methods, rather than growing from seeds. Because there is so much to cover in both methods, we'll be dedicating a separate talk to the topic of growing from seeds later in the year. Join both talks to learn it all!
This talk will cover:
- The basic science of how new plants grow from old
- Understanding "sexual" vs "asexual" propagation methods
- An overview of different methods of vegetative plant propagation, including: cuttings, layering, division, budding and grafting
- Identifying which method to use for different plants
- How to take, strike and transplant cuttings
- What is the best time of year to propagate, and when not to propagate
- Hands-on practice propagating plants
This talk is suitable for the curious beginner and experienced indoor gardeners. The formal talk will be approximately 1 hour in length, followed by 30 minutes of questions from participants, so please feel free to bring along a question, photo or miserable plant for Steve to solve.
Participants are welcome to join in person or join online via webinar: choose from one of these two options when registering. If you have selected the option to join online, you will be sent a link via email to login to the presentation online on the day before the talk's start time (for this reason, please ensure that you include your email address when registering). You will also need to select the "in-store pickup" option for delivery if you are joining online. We will have a moderator who will field questions for Steve from people who are joining online. Coffee and light food will be available for purchase for those attending in person.
