When you start to look further than the beautiful colours and details you find they are often living a world challenged by climate change and pollution. As a result, some species like the magical christmas beetle which I enjoyed as a child, are sadly declining in numbers making them even harder to find. The title Beestjes is an affectionate Dutch word for 'little beasts', a nod to my heritage and love for 17th century Dutch botanical art.

About the artist.

Amanda Laing is an artist and designer from Brisbane interested in the human experience of colour and pattern found in the natural world, in particular plants, flowers and insects. Her work takes a mindfulness approach to exploring the innate connections we hold with the natural world and the importance of protecting our natural environment. Amanda works with mediums including paint, drawing, textiles and re-purposed materials and believes in art-making as a powerful form of personal expression, in particular for children and people of neurodiversity. Of Dutch heritage, she has a Graduate Certificate in Visual Art, a Bachelor of Education (Secondary Art Teaching), and a Bachelor of Built Environment majoring in Interior Design.

Collection or delivery.

This item is part of the Plant Empire Garden Art Exhibition, on display at Plant Empire from 17 October - 22 November 2026.
