Birds and Botanics Wall Art Workshop (25–26 June 2022)
Birds and Botanics Wall Art: 2-day Intensive Workshop with Jane du Rand, 9-5pm 25–26 June
This is the second in a series of two-day intensive workshops led by Jane du Rand at Plant Empire in 2022. Immerse yourself in ceramics and mosaics for a full weekend in June and learn from an internationally renowned artist to make a large mosaic shield featuring your own hand-made ceramic birds and botanical reliefs.
A “relief” in art is a 3-dimensional sculpture that sits against a solid base or backing, as if rising from formlessness into form. Reliefs made from clay form an essential part of Jane du Rand’s ceramic and mosaic art, allowing her to combine ceramics and mosaics in unique ways that provide scale and life to her work. Jane’s bird shields were featured in her 2021 "Ornithological Observations" exhibition in Brisbane and celebrate the beauty and movement of Australia's native birds.
In this special workshop held over two days, you will learn from Jane du Rand to design and create a large mosaic shield featuring your own handmade bird and botanical ceramic reliefs. Your finished piece will be a beautiful and unique piece of wall art for inside or outside the home and also makes a special gift.
In preparation for the workshop, you might like to identify particular bird and plant species that you would like to feature in your shield, although reference materials will also be on hand to inspire you. The workshop will begin with a session on design, to create a blueprint for the composition, tile choices, glazes and overall colour scheme for your work. We will spend the first day making the ceramic bird and botanic reliefs that will adorn your shield. You will learn hand-building skills and Jane's own techniques for making three-dimensional ceramic birds with fine details down to the last feather. You will also be able to make use of ceramic moulds made by Jane to use to press repeated botanic elements for your work.
The second day will focus on translating your design using mosaics. You will learn about the tools and materials that Jane uses in her mosaic art, along with techniques for cutting mosaic tiles to create different design effects. Depending on the size of your shield, the balance between ceramic and mosaic surfaces, and the level of detail that your mosaic design entails, you might not finish the full mosaic to complete your work during the workshop. You will, however leave with all the tools and training to allow you to finish your work at home on your own, and Jane will host a follow-up consultation session by webinar to answer any questions you might have if you become unstuck.
