Botanics in Relief Workshop (24 April – 8 May)
Botanics in Relief Workshop with Jane du Rand: 2–5pm Saturday 24 April – 8 May.
A “relief” in art is a 3-dimensional sculpture that sits against a solid base or backing, as if rising from formlessness into form. Reliefs made from clay form an essential part of Jane du Rand’s ceramic and mosaic art, allowing her to combine ceramics and mosaics in unique ways that provide scale and life to her work. Jane’s botanical reliefs are in demand from art collectors around the world.
In this special 9-hour workshop held over 3 weeks, you will learn from Jane du Rand to design and create a detailed botanical relief using clay. In the first workshop, you will make a special ceramic vessel as the base for your relief, and will make your first 3-dimensional leaves, flowers, and/or seeds to be framed by the vessel. This intricate sculpting work will continue through to the second workshop, after which your piece will be bisque-fired ready for week 3. In the final workshop, you will glaze your work with your own selection of decorative finishes and colours before the work is kiln-fired for a second time, ready for collection at Plant Empire from 15 May. Your finished piece can be used as wall art inside or outside the home.
All materials and equipment for the workshop, including clay and glazes to make your relief will be provided. This workshop is targeted for adults, but is also suitable for teenagers or tweens when accompanying an adult or older sibling. All levels of experience welcome.
