Garden Totem Workshop (30 Oct - 6 Nov)
Garden Totem Workshop with Monte Lupo Arts: 30 October – 6 November.
In this 9-hour workshop held over two weekends in October/November, you will learn from artist Kim Green from Monte Lupo Arts to sculpt and decorate your own ceramic Garden Totem to live in your garden at home.
In the first week's 3-hour workshop, you will learn a range of hand-building pottery techniques including slab building, press moulding, and scoring and slipping to make your totem pieces. In the second 3-hour session the following day, you will embellish your pieces with your own choice of graphical elements and decorative elements such as butterflies, flowers and bees using techniques such as mould pressing and carving. When you return a week later for the final 3-hour class, you will learn about underglaze for bisque ware and how to apply different painting and glazing techniques. Your finished pieces will be fired twice following this second workshop (the second time with clear glaze), and will be ready for collection from 13 November.
Workshop dates and times:
1. Saturday 30 October: 10-1pm
2. Sunday 31 October: 10-1pm
3. Saturday 6 November: 10-1pm
Stakes aren't supplied in this workshop in order to give students the flexibility to make totems to their own design specifications; however, metal star pickets are a popular choice for installing garden totems and can be purchased in a range of sizes from hardware stores.
All levels of experience are welcome for this workshop, and all materials and equipment for the workshop will be supplied. This workshop is suitable adults and children over 10. All Plant Empire workshop presenters involving children are Blue Card holders.
