Houses in Relief Workshop (30 January – 13 February 2021)
Houses in Relief Workshop with Jane du Rand: 2–5pm Saturday 30 January – 13 February.
A “relief” in art is a 3-dimensional sculpture that sits against a solid base or backing, as if rising from formlessness into form. Reliefs made from clay form an essential part of Jane du Rand’s ceramic and mosaic art, allowing her to combine ceramics and mosaics in unique ways that provide scale and life to her work. Jane’s house reliefs are the focus of her current "Living in Ipswich" exhibition at the Ipswich Art Gallery (until 14 February 2021) and are a celebration of Queensland exteriors and the people that inhabit their interiors.
In this special 9-hour workshop held over 3 weeks, you will learn from Jane du Rand to design and create a house and/or garden in relief using clay. You are encouraged to bring an A4-size photo or image of the scene that you would like to re-create as your relief. Finished pieces will be minimally decorated with oxides and stains and kiln-fired, and can be used as wall art inside or outside the home. Your house relief will be a beautiful and unique talking piece and would make a special gift for a loved one.
All materials and equipment for the workshop, including clay, oxides and stains to make and decorate your relief will be provided. This workshop is targeted for adults, but is also suitable for teenagers or tweens when accompanying an adult or older sibling. All levels of experience welcome.
