Indigo Dyeing and Shibori Workshop (3 July)
Indigo Dyeing and Shibori Workshop with Kirsty Bailey: 2–5pm Saturday 3 July.
Shibori is a traditional Japanese textile art that uses natural indigo dyeing techniques to produce intricately patterned designs in characteristic deep blue hues. The slow, thoughtful process of preparing fabrics for dyeing and the alchemy of indigo invites us to rediscover harmony with nature and all its magical possibilities. The art of Shibori carries an organic quality and element of excitement to the fabric it transforms.
Kirsty Bailey from textile company Lava Living is well known for her skills in combining traditional Shibori dyeing methods with modern designs to create contemporary indigo products. In this workshop, Kirsty will teach a number of basic Shibori techniques to generate interesting patterns and designs with indigo dye, including tying, clamping, stitching, and resist-dye techniques. You will be able to choose and adapt techniques to make your own unique hand-dyed fabric, garment, home or fashion accessory.
The workshop registration fee includes a complimentary linen tea-towel from Lava Living for you to dye and take home. You are welcome to bring along up to four garments or pieces of fabric made from natural fibres to dye at the workshop as well, allowing you to explore different techniques and patterns. Kirsty will also have a range of dyeable items available for sale on the day, including bags, table linens and scarves. All other materials and equipment to dye your fabrics will be supplied.
All levels of experience welcome. Please wear closed shoes, clothes that you are happy to stain (and/or an apron), and bring your own gloves if you're allergic to latex. You may also like to pack a plastic bag to take any damp pieces home with you. Morning tea will be provided.
