Kids Art Class with Jane du Rand (Term 2: 1 May – 26 June)

Kids Art Class with Jane du Rand: 4–5:30pm Fridays (1 May – 26 June 2020).

Jane du Rand’s ceramics and mosaic art combine a range of technical and artistic skills to bring the natural world to life within urban environments, and it is this approach that she aims to bring to her new children’s art class program.

Each week, children will learn new artistic skills around a central theme which encourages children to appreciate beauty and life in the world around them. For term 2’s program, the art theme will be Bushfire survivors: Australian native birds and animals, which children will explore through step-by-step exercises in mediums that include drawing, painting, ceramics, sculptures, and mosaics. The weekly program for term 2 will include:

Week 1: Drawing. We look carefully at the animal and draw it in different ways.
Week 2: Clay making. We create flat/relief animal tiles in clay using our drawings.
Week 3: Painting. We paint our relief tiles using underglazes.
Week 4: Clay making. We sculpt 3-dimensional animals using clay.
Week 5: Mosaics. We make mosaic creatures using a ceramic frame made by Jane.
Week 6: Painting. We paint the bisque-fired 3D animals that we made in week 4.
Week 7: Grouting. We grout the mosaics that we made in week 5.
Week 8: Mosaic making. We make a mosaic surround for our flat/relief animals made in week 2.
Week 9: Presentation. We grout our animal ceramic/mosaic pieces and present all our finished pieces.

Jane is passionate about working with children and teaching them how to use art to engage with the world around them in creative ways. As a successful professional artist, trained architect, and avid nature lover, Jane’s lessons combine art, technique and nature in a welcoming and supportive learning environment. She has developed and delivered numerous international children’s art programs over the last three decades, including regular workshops, school-based art projects, and community art installations.
