Everything Insect! Kids 4-Day Winter Art Camp with Jane du Rand: 9–5pm 28 June – 6 July 2022

Jane du Rand's popular art classes for kids are popping up again like a butterfly from the chrysalis for the winter school holidays! Talk Mum or Dad into dropping you off at Plant Empire on Tuesday and Wednesday for both weeks of the winter school holidays for 4 full days of nature and art activities designed just for kids.

During this four-day art camp we will become artist-entomologists, looking at the insect life that surrounds us in Queensland, what they do, and why they are important.
We will draw inspiration from the wonderful shapes, patterns and colours found on the insects that we study, from spiders and beetles through to butterflies and bees, and will create wonderful artworks to take home.

Each day, we will learn new artistic skills around a central theme which encourages us to appreciate beauty and life in the world around us. We will explore step-by-step exercises in mediums that include drawing, painting, ceramics, sculptures, and mosaics. We are also going to get up close and personal with insects with a visit to the Queensland Museum and a special on-site visit from an insect keeper who will bring real live insects for the children to see up close. It's going to be fun!

-----------------------

The daily program for this art camp includes:

Day 1: Tuesday 28 June

  • First up, we will have a get-to-know each other session at the wonderful Plant Empire workshop space.
  • After this, we will walk to Yeerongpilly station where we will take the train to South Brisbane station and visit the Queensland Museum. With our sketch books, we will have a detailed look at the insect specimens and do sketches and drawings of what we see.
  • We will head back to Plant Empire for lunch, then get to work with our drawings, converting them into large scale colour artworks using painting and collage techniques with transparent and translucent paper layering.

Day 2: Wednesday 29 June

  • Today we will work with clay, making ceramic versions of the insects that most inspire us. There will be a range of options for ceramic pieces that can be made with an insect theme.
  • We will talk about one importance of the insects that we have chosen to make and the work that these insects do in the environment.
  • Some of the ceramic pieces that we make will be made especially to use in conjunction with our mosaic project, which we'll work on the following week.

Day 3: Tuesday 5 July

  • After a small break apart, we will all be back together and Jane will have all the ceramic pieces bisque fired. We can now paint these pieces with underglazes ready for their final glaze firing, and can help Jane load these into the kiln later in the day.
  • We will also have a visit today from an insect keeper who will bring some live insects for us to see and experience for an amazing show and tell.
  • During the afternoon we will use some of our pre-prepared pieces to make a short stop-motion video based on an insect story that we would like to tell based on what we have learnt.

Day 4: Wednesday 6 July

  • Today we will make a mosaic featuring some of the three-dimensional ceramic pieces we have already made together with some glass and ceramic mosaic tiles. We will have the choice of one or two options of the type of mosaic art work they we would like to create - for example, wall art or a planter.
  • In the afternoon, we will grout our mosaics and attach all our ceramics that we made during the week to our mural. Afterwards, we clean the grout, continue attaching decorative pieces and touch up painting.
  • Finally, we reveal our finished artworks to our friends and family and sit back to enjoy our work and their adulation over a warm drink.
