Mosaic Pedestal Bird Bath Workshop (20 February – 20 March)

Mosaic Pedestal Bird Bath Workshop with Jane du Rand: 2–5pm Saturday 20 February – 20 March (15 hours over 5 weeks).

In this workshop, ceramic and mosaic artist Jane du Rand will work with you to make a one-of-a-kind mosaic pedestal bird bath featuring exquisite ceramic pond creatures hand-made by you. The finished pedestal bird bath makes a substantial and unique piece of art for your garden or a special gift for a loved one.

This is a 15-hour workshop held over five weeks, and involves every step from design to ceramic to mosaic to complete your finished bird bath:

Week 1 (20 February): you will design your overall mosaic artwork and draw the water-loving creatures that will feature on your bird bath and bring them to life using clay. You will have the choice to make frogs, dragonflies, fish and water birds using your own selection of decorative finishes and colours, are are encouraged to make as many pieces as you would like to decorate your bird bath. Your pond creatures will be bisque-fired during the week following this first week's class.

Week 2 (27 February): you will glaze your pond creatures and start the work of transferring your mosaic design onto your bird bath, as well as choosing the colour scheme for your design. Jane will teach you the fundamentals of good mosaic design and practice, and show you how to cut the correct mosaic shapes from glass tiles before starting to lay down your first mosaic tiles.

Weeks 3 (6 March): you will attach your pond creatures to your bird bath and cut mosaic tiles to surround your pond creatures and integrate them with your broader design.

Week 4 (13 March): you will continue your mosaic work to fill in the spaces between your pond creatures, using the right tile shapes to realise the shapes in your original design.

Week 5 (20 March): you will complete any last sections of your mosaic before grouting the entire bird bath and cleaning it. The finished piece can be taken home at the end of this class, or collected from Plant Empire during the week following.

This workshop differs from Jane du Rand's Mosaic Saucer Bird Bath in its length and the size of the bird bath that you will make: the pedestal bird bath workshop involves making a mosaic stand and a bowl in two pieces, whereas the saucer bird bath workshop involves making a shallow mosaic vessel as a standalone piece.

All materials and equipment for the workshop will be supplied, including clay, mosaic tiles and a two-piece pedestal terracotta bird bath which forms the foundation for your mosaic art. See the attached images for an example of a terracotta bird bath (approx. 50cm wide and 60cm high) which may be supplied for this workshop. Please note that the actual bird bath style will be subject to availability: while we can't guarantee this exact style will be used due to current supply delays, we will aim to provide some different style options if it can't.

Cost: $500 / $450 (Multi-pass)

Multi-pass discount: Sign up for 2 or more Plant Empire events, or register 2 or more people for the same event, to receive 10% off the ticket price (discount will appear at checkout).
