Throwing Mugs Workshop with Carys Martin: 10–1pm Saturday 2 March.
Location: this workshop will be held in Carys Martin's studio at Unit 11/7-9 Grant St, Cleveland (not at Plant Empire in Yeerongpilly).

We're planning two special workshops this year to make exquisite mugs in partnership with ceramicist Carys Martin who will be exhibiting her work at Plant Empire later in the year. This first wheel-throwing workshop will be held at Carys' studio in Cleveland, and the second workshop will be held a week later at Plant Empire in Yeerongpilly. You can sign up for either workshop or do both and save 10% on the registration fee.

In this first workshop, we're going to learn how to use a pottery wheel to make a mug from clay. Carys will take you through the steps of how to throw a cup on the wheel, you will be able to try your hand at centering the clay, opening it up, compressing the base and pulling up the sides of the cup.

For the second part of this workshop, you will work on a leather-hard cup form that Carys has thrown for you. We will work in a pale-coloured clay for this workshop to increase the intensity of colours on the final piece. You can add a handle, carve into the surface, add sprigs (3-dimensional reliefs pressed using moulds) and other hand-built details to the surface.

If you're joining our "Enchanted Mugs" workshop the following week, your mug will be bisque fired ready for you to glaze in the following week in Yeerongpilly, and Carys will fire and glaze your other cup for you with your choice of studio glazes. Finished work can be collected from Plant Empire in Yeerongpilly two weeks following the workshop.

Carys Martin is a full-time artist with a ceramics studio in Cleveland where she produces both practical, functional art and one-off artworks. Her work features detailed surface decorations inspired by nature and the woodlands and folklore of Cumbria where she spent her childhood. She creates artworks that are beautiful, hold meaning, and tell a story.

This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners wanting to learn how to throw a vessel on a pottery wheel, as well as more advanced students who would like to learn from Carys. All materials and equipment for the workshop will be supplied, including clay, firing and glazes. Please wear closed shoes and clothes that you don't mind getting covered in clay, and avoid loose clothing, hair or jewellery.
