Tropical Flowers

By artist: Claire Manchanda

Acrylic on canvas, 41 x 51cm

I chose to paint some of my favourite botanicals – gum leaves, birds of paradise flower and leaves, pink and cream daisies and a palm leaf. This arrangement feels very tropical to me and reminds me of the vegetation around the Whitsundays, where I lived for a time. I used very thick paint and exaggerated the colour value to create strong juxtaposing light and shadow. I also painted this in a loose style that I felt suited the fun tropical floral arrangement.

About the artist.

I’m a Brisbane still life painter with a focus on florals. I paint predominantly in acrylics, as well as some watercolour painting. I explore light and shadows in my painting with an emphasis on value and tone. I work from life and from photographs. I have been painting for many years but have had a daily practice for one year. I have recently been going through cancer treatment and while it has been horrible it has allowed me to give time to my art. Another silver lining was all the love and support I received, partly in the form of flowers. I began painting them and my love for painting flowers arose! I’ve spent plenty of hours in the art room painting alongside my creative mum who taught me how to paint. I am passionate about painting as a profession.
