Wartime Relic II

By artist: Kelly Southee

Acrylic on Chapman Bailey custom canvas. 41 x 51 x 2 cm

Description

Building No 27 (known as the QF Case Shop) was the largest building within the World War 2 Rocklea Munitions Works in the southern Brisbane suburb of Salisbury. What we see here is only half of the building that once existed. The other half burnt down in more recent years. And we are presented now with a vast area of drama leading to the dramatic row of saw tooth roofs.

I like to admire the under-appreciated places and find the stories of suburbs and lesser known places fascinating. There is now a history trail that you can follow on these streets of Brisbane thanks to the council. It's very worthwhile!

About the artist.

Kelly Southee is a Queensland-based artist. She was born in New Zealand and has lived in Australia since the 1980s. The built environment has been an enduring theme in Kelly’s painting practice for over 25 years. Having studied and worked as an interior architect, she is fascinated by the way we live within our cities, and what we appreciate and value.

Kelly’s scenes often feature dramatic dark colours in the foreground areas. This is a result of a very real thing: she is an artist who needs to stand in the shade a lot, having had too many skin cancers cut out over the years. It’s amazing how a life can inform an art practice!
