Wheel Throwing Workshop (22 January)

Wheel Throwing Workshop with Monte Lupo Arts: 6–8pm Friday 22 January.

In this workshop, you will learn the basics of using a pottery wheel to make ceramics working with artist Fiona Haynes from Monte Lupo Arts.

If you've ever wanted to learn how to do wheel throwing, this is for you. This workshop is aimed teaching absolute beginners how to "throw" a vessel using a pottery wheel, and we've scheduled a number of structured and unstructured sessions over a two-week period to provide opportunities for to build your own an learning experience by adding workshops and open studio time to suit yourself.

Wheel throwing looks easy in the hands of an expert but is deceptively difficult, and they say it can take up to 5 years to master this craft. How many sessions you should do depends entirely on how proficient you want to become with the wheel. After one workshop (2 hours), you can expect to have your first experience of successfully throwing a vessel; after two workshops (4 hours), you will understand the basic process and be building confidence with the wheel. Practice is key at this point, and you might like to sign up to more structured workshops to gain more one-on-one assistance, or join one of the open studio sessions with Monte Lupo Arts to access materials and equipment to continue practising on the wheel with minimal assistance.

Firing and glazing of your wheel-thrown vessels is included in your workshop fee. Your completed pieces will be fired following the workshop and you will need to return at a later date to glaze your work/s, either during the next week's open studio session with Monte Lupo Arts or by joining a glazing session as part of another workshop Monte Lupo Arts (by prior arrangement).

All levels of experience are welcome for this workshop, and all materials and equipment for the workshop will be supplied, including clay, firing and glazes. Please wear closed shoes and clothes that you don't mind getting covered in clay, and avoid loose clothing, hair or jewellery. This workshop is suitable for adults and children over 10. All Plant Empire workshop presenters involving children are Blue Card holders.

Cost: $80 / $72 (Multi-pass)
