"Martinis and Mayhem" is a hand-built ceramic vase featuring whimsical, hand-painted imagery that explores the exhibition theme "Not My Monkey, Not My Circus". At the centre of the piece, a woman is reclining on a lilo, calmly reading a book and sipping a martini while sunning herself, and seemingly oblivious to the chaos unfolding around her. Circus tents sink, performers scramble, and mayhem erupts, yet she remains perfectly unbothered. Painted in bright, vibrant colours and packed with intricate detail, the work invites viewers to look closely and discover the many humorous narratives hidden within the scene. Inspired by the visual delight of a "Where's Wally?" illustration, the vase rewards repeated viewing, revealing new characters and moments of chaos with each glance. Through humour and playful storytelling, Martinis and Mayhem reflects on the art of detachment, reminding us that not every problem is ours to solve.
About the artist.
Nicola Brockett is a ceramic artist creating handmade functional and decorative pottery inspired by colour, nature, and everyday beauty. Known for her vibrant palettes and distinctive hand-painted designs, her work often features whimsical florals and organic motifs that bring personality and joy to everyday objects. Working primarily in clay, Nicola creates unique mugs, vases, planters, and decorative pieces that balance functionality with artistic expression. Each piece is individually crafted and finished by hand, reflecting her passion for craftsmanship, colour, and creativity. This item is part of the Not My Monkey Art Exhibition, on display at Plant Empire from 25 July - 16 August 2026. Exhibition items are available for sale in person or online.
