Somewhere Only We Know

By artist: Anita Armbrust

Logs, bark, sticks, nuts, seeds, hessian, leaves, fronds, moss, rocks and fungi. 37 x 37 x 37 cm

Constructed mostly from natural and found materials, this handcrafted fairy house transforms organic elements into a miniature world of imagination and wonder. Bark, seed pods, leaves, twigs, stones and other collected treasures are carefully assembled to create an enchanting dwelling that appears as though it has emerged naturally from the landscape itself. The artwork celebrates the beauty and diversity of the natural world, highlighting the intricate textures, patterns, colours and forms often overlooked in everyday surroundings. Each material retains its unique character, contributing to the individuality of the piece while demonstrating how nature can become both medium and inspiration. Blending sculpture, storytelling and environmental awareness, the fairy house invites viewers to look closely and discover unexpected details within its construction. Familiar natural objects are reimagined and transformed, creating a sense of magic and possibility while maintaining a strong connection to the earth from which they came. By elevating humble materials into a work of art, the piece encourages contemplation of the relationship between creativity and nature. It evokes a sense of curiosity, nostalgia and wonder, inviting viewers to slow down, explore its intricate details and imagine the stories that might exist within this tiny dwelling.

About the artist.

I enjoy spending time outdoors, walking in nature and discovering the beauty in small things that are easily overlooked. I grew up in the country and spent my childhood exploring paddocks, rivers and creeks. I have always collected natural materials (such as leaves, bark, seed pods, sticks and stones) that inspire my creativity and reflect my love of the outdoors and the natural world. The textures, shapes, colours and patterns I discover inspire me, and each item I collect has its own character and story, which I enjoy incorporating into my artwork. With this fairy house, I have transformed ordinary objects from nature into something magical and imaginative, combining my love of nature with my creativity. Creating this artwork has helped me slow down, be mindful and appreciate the unique details and treasures found in nature. Nature is amazing!
