Beneath the Waves
Beneath the Waves
By artist: Gabrielle O'Brien
Paper clay with glaze and mother of pearl and gold lustre. 14 x 12 x 20 cm
This paper‑clay ocean nymph rises from the currents as a quiet homage to what exists beyond human sight beneath the waves. Inspired by the Nereids of Greek mythology—the sea nymphs who guided sailors, guarded hidden realms, and embodied the ocean’s shifting moods, she carries the presence of those ancient, unseen guardians. Her form is interlaced with shells, coral, and strands of kelp, echoing the fragile ecosystems she protects. By merging mythic lineage with marine textures, the piece invites viewers to consider the worlds that thrive beneath the surface and the stories that remain unheard unless we choose to look more closely.
About the artist.
My work is grounded in a deep appreciation for the natural world, drawing inspiration from the rich traditions of art history decorative arts, and the storytelling traditions of folklore and mythology inform my work. My practice explores the expressive possibilities of paper clay through both hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. I am drawn to the material’s capacity for delicacy and detail, shaping it into botanical forms, mythic figures, and nature-inspired pieces that sit between sculpture and ornament. I have exhibited in several local community art shows, including Ceramic Arts Queensland’s annual Elemental exhibitions, and the Redcliffe Pottery Group’s annual Clay on Display exhibitions. In 2022, the Museum of Brisbane acquired my piece ‘Jacaranda’ for its Commune permanent collection. In 2025, I collaborated with Earth Water Fire Ceramic Artist Collective’s 'Feminine Facets of Form' which featured sculptural busts and figurines from my flower nymph series.
