On The Edge: Leadbeater's Possum

By artist: Charlie Maxwell

Acrylic on paper. 16 x 21 x 2 cm

Australia has an extinction crisis that is quietly suffocating our natural world. Leadbeater's Possum (Gymnobelideus leadbeateri) is a critically endangered species of arboreal marsupial that is dwindling in numbers. Here, an individual is pictured on the branch of its preferred habitat tree, the Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus regnans), along with a pair of Christmas Beetles (Anoplognathus species) which are part of the possum's diet. This artwork calls attention to the fragile future of a species unseen.
