Unseen Positivity
Unseen Positivity
By artist: Sheryl Johnson
Ceramics. 14 x 18 x 40 cm
While considering the concept of "unseen", I noticed that in general it has a negative connotation so I went to the trusty thesaurus and searched for words or phrases relating to its positive attributes. This is when I discovered the phrases: "invisible asset", "veiled brilliance", "latent talent", "untapped potential", "shrouded in mystery", "undiscovered treasure", "hidden gem", "unexplored territory", and "emerging innovation". These turned the whole topic on its head: "unseen" was now a positive, good-news story! Loving words, texture and colour, I put them all together to create a mobile about unseen's positives.
About the artist.
I am a ceramic artist based in Elanora on the Gold Coast. I love the exploration and experimentation opportunities that ceramics give me and regularly try new ideas. All of my work is hand-built and ranges from garden sculptures to vases, wall hangings, decorated spheres and kitchenware. The pieces always include some form of texture, pattern or decorative 3D sculptural elements created using fabric, ceramic tools, stamps, and cutters. I enjoy making items that are unique, one-of-a-kind, sometimes quirky and unusual, but always different, and love to incorporate colour as a carefully thought out element of the finished piece. I have worked in art in some capacity whether full-time, part-time or as a hobbyist since the 1990s exploring painting, textile art, mosaics and ceramics.
