Mandy Brooks Exhibition: Taking Care of Business (14–27 June 2024)
Sculptures by Mandy Brooks will be on show in "Taking Care of Business", an exhibition in Plant Empire's Glasshouse Gallery from 14 to 27 May 2024.
The ladies in this exhibition come from stories that my Mother would tell me at bedtime as a child. My Mum worked long hours as a chef by day and she had five kids to care for; yet she always found time to tell me stories about interesting women in our family tree, from female convicts, battered wives, many artists and brothel house owners... oh, and vaudeville performers! The women in my family tree are survivors as no matter what the world threw at them, they never stopped TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS, providing love, comfort, emotional support, food and happiness. I'm grateful to have researched all the amazing women that came before me. (Thank you, Mum.)

About the artist
Mandy Brooks is a Brisbane-based ceramic artist who works between her home studio in Annerley and the beautiful Plant Empire creative space in Yeerongpilly. Her work has been described as whimsical and bright, with an at times darker vibe. A lot of her work is autobiographical, and this can be seen in the activities that her ladies and sculptures are doing in their poses.
