Carousel

By artist: Megan Evans

Recycled metal and fabric, preserved poinciana pods, pendant light and tiny tin music box. 85 x 64 x 160 cm

A playful, magical, carousel-inspired chandelier celebrates the beauty of the humble poinciana pod. I have been captivated by these remarkable seed pods for some time, and this piece invites their natural sculptural forms to sway and dance, casting ever-changing shadows while light glimmers from their delicate fabric stems. The carousel shape was inspired by a rusty spring discovered by the roadside beneath a poinciana tree—an unexpected find that sparked the idea for this work. Step aboard, enjoy a little music, and take a ride on the carousel.

About the artist.

Megan is a mixed media artist based in Brisbane whose greatest influence is the natural world. She has always found pleasure and purpose in creating things, and from an early age loved to draw, paint, sew, print and make gardens. Megan has trained at the Brisbane Institute of Art and TAFE, focussing on drawing and figurative painting. Her current sculptural practice began after attending a fibre art workshop about a decade ago where she was inspired by the possibilities of merging her love of nature with her interest in texture, fabric, form and line. Megan’s use of recycled and foraged materials is a deliberate aim to tread lightly with her practice. She enjoys the challenge of using them in unexpected, sustainable and enduring ways. Her hope is that like nature itself, her pieces evoke a sense of timelessness, harmony and wonder. She enjoys private commissions and recent works are available at Plant Empire and Hanasho stores.
