Straight and Narrow
Straight and Narrow
By artist: Sue Phillips
Mirror and glass tiles, silicone and grout on PVC pipe. 15 x 15 x 100 cm
Mirror forms a central design element of this garden totem pole. The mirror is the strongest reflector of light and throws glints of the colour of the surrounding glass as well as the colour in the environment. We need the shadow of the leaves and bark to highlight the beauty of the flowers. "Straight and Narrow" refers to the lengths of mirrors that serve as rails that keep us on track. The Garden totem pole is constructed from PVC pipe and glass pieces (some recycled), mirror and glass tiles. All pieces are cut by hand, glued on using silicone and grouted. The pole is designed to be placed in the ground in the garden.
About the artist.
After retiring from the world of education, I found a new creative path in glass. I have spent time exploring various disciplines including copper foiling, leadlighting and mosaics and find inspiration from so many glass artists. What draws me most to glass is its beauty and its relationship with light with its unique ability to capture light, shift colour, and reveal new details throughout the day.
