Urban Photography Workshop (1 November 2026)
Urban Photography Workshop with Glenn Homann
10–12 noon Sunday 1 November 2026
Join award-winning urban photographer Glenn Homann for this 2-hour workshop to learn how to capture moments of beauty in the world around you using just your phone camera.
This is our first urban photography workshop with acclaimed photographer Glenn Homann (aka @blueboy70 on Instagram) whose uses an iPhone exclusively for all his photography and editing work.
See the world differently as we elevate the mundane, the ordinary and the downright ugly scenes of urban life into scenes of beauty. Whether you're a budding photographer or just want to know how to use your phone camera better, this workshop welcomes all skill levels and will help you master your phone's camera and editing tools to produce great photographs first time, every time.
There are many advantages to use your mobile phone as your main camera: it is relatively low-tech and accessible to most people; it affords virtually unlimited storage; and it allows us to edit photographs immediately after taking them. Importantly, mobile phones are small and portable and always at hand, allowing for unexpected and spontaneous moments to be captured at any moment. The simpler the technology, the more spontaneous we can be, allowing us to focus on honing our eye for the environment around us, and develop a strategic eye for composition.
This workshop starts with an exploration of the fundamental visual principles of photographic art, with a focus on composition through tone, balance, space and repetition. We will then shift our focus to the technical aspects of our cameras, exploring the types of phones that people have brought to the workshop and develop an understanding of their basic functions.
Glenn will demonstrate the phones' camera apps and how different the features impact on the visual elements of a photograph. We will practise a few simple exercises to develop our understanding of our phone camera's features and explore the visual results, adding more features and visual elements as we gain skills and confidence. We will discuss the process and resulting images as a group and Glenn will share examples of similar photos that he has taken with his phone and talk through the process that he followed and the key elements that led to a good output.
Using the photographs we've taken during the workshop, Glenn will show us how to use the editing tools on our phone to enhance the image, using tools such as cropping, exposure and colour balance to elevate the final result and how we want the image to communicate visually. Rather than treating editing as a magical fix for any photo, Glenn will help us to use it as an tool to engage critically with the photo in order to help us strategically plan images that require minimal editing.

The essential piece of equipment for this workshop is a mobile phone camera, so please bring along your iPhone or Android phone to use in the workshop.

About Brooke Arnolda
Glenn Homann is an award-winning photographer who uses an iPhone to capture unique imagery in and around his hometown of Brisbane. Having his phone camera on hand from dawn to dusk has shaped and honed Glenn's work, allowing him to focus on the moments and details that might evade the eye at first glance. Glenn's practice also involves editing photos on his phone very soon after the image is captured while the feelings and thoughts about his intentions with the image still fresh in the mind, ensuring that his photographs reflect his original attention to detail and focus on spontaneity. Glenn's photos lean into a minimal aesthetic and have received awards in numerous competitions around the world, both for general photography and those exclusively for mobile devices.
