BLOOMING

By artist: Megan Partoredjo

Bromeliad leaves, linen/silk thread, recycled lamp frame, stainless steel fasteners. 60 x 60 x 95cm.

Description

I love the colours, textures and curves of bromeliad leaves as they age: they transform from lush green foliage to woody, solid structures that deserve a second life! This work celebrates the joyous dance of petals unfurling on a new day. Illuminating the piece from within creates an amazing play of shadows and energy. For full effect, it is recommended to hang this pendant above eye level.

The piece was made in successive layers, with each leaf soaked, shaped, then hand stitched in place. As the layers thickened, so did my needle and my muscles!

The leaves that have been used in this piece have been cleaned, disinfected and sealed for protection and longevity with Tung oil sealer. A low wattage LED pendant light is included with the artwork. As with all natural fibres, a light spray with diluted clove oil annually will provide ongoing protection from mould in humid environments.

About the artist.

Megan Partoredjo is a Brisbane-based multidisciplinary artist. Her practice has evolved from her lifelong love of creating things with her hands - weaving, painting, knitting, drawing, sewing and sculpting. Using materials that she has gathered from nature, including recycled textiles, vintage finds, ink, thread and paint, she loves the challenge of bringing simple, honest elements together to create something lasting and beautiful. Megan says that each piece begins with a moment of inspiration from nature: “it may be a perfectly symmetrical seed pod, the texture or colour of a leaf, or elegantly entwined branches that first inspires the journey to incorporate this idea”. The end result appears as though it is nature’s version of what she had originally imagined: the materials lead the way and take her with them. She hopes her artworks enhance the beauty and calmness of a home and bring a joyful sense of wonder at the simple gifts from nature all around us.
