Kids Naturopolis Workshop with Ingrid Bartkowiak: 10–12 noon Wednesday 20 December 2023.

Drop the kids off for a special holiday workshop with artist Ingrid Bartkowiak to learn about the hidden nature all around us, and how to draw our favourite plants and animals by making a set of nature tags, which we can also use as gift tags or special gifts for love ones, just in time for Christmas!

Ingrid will begin this workshop with a book reading of her children's book with Deborah Frenkel, "Naturopolis". We will talk about making our own "nature tags" similar to what is found in the book: these are small, gift tag sized artworks made by children that are inspired by the nature they can find around them and share this joy with others. What plants and animals do we see in our own Naturopolis that we might like to draw?

Ingrid will show us how to draw plants and animals, starting with some of the ones that are found in the book, and moving on to real-life plants provided for the workshop. She will demonstrate how to take a complex shape and break it down into something easy for us to draw. We'll then get stuck into making our own set of tags by creating base drawings of the plants and animals that we'd like to feature before adding coloured pencil, fine liner, and string to finish off the tags to take home.

Ingrid Bartkowiak is a Brisbane-based artist and illustrator who paints Australian native flora, fauna and fungi using watercolour. Ingrid's work celebrates all things small and intricate, from tufts of moss on a footpath to the fungi sprouting from a wombat dropping. Her distinctive style is inspired by botanical illustration and the Arts & Crafts movement through its use of tiny patterns, exquisite detail, and vivid blocks of colour.

All materials required for the workshop are supplied. This workshop is suitable for children of all ages; however, a parent or older sibling should accompany children under 6. Please note that we don't send workshop reminders, so please be sure to add this event to your calendar as soon as you've registered.
