Flowers Workshop with Mandy Lou Ceramics: 10–12 noon Sunday 24 September & 1 October 2023

Join ceramicist Mandy Brooks from Mandy Lou Ceramics in this two-part workshop to make and your own ceramics flowers, to use as garden stakes, a bouquet, jewellery or mosaic features.

This workshop is split over two sessions: making the flowers out of clay, then decorating them. In the first week's 2-hour workshop, you will learn how to construct different types of flowers, big and small. To start, you can choose from a range of materials that you can use to texture the surface of the flowers, if you would like to use that option for some or all of your flowers. You will then start cutting out some of your flowers using cookie-cutter type templates, others by hand, and others still will be a combination of both. Some will be flat, others curled up, and others still will be multi-layered and 3-dimensional. The number of flowers that you make in total will depend on how large and detailed you want to make them, and also how fast you can work. You can expect to make at least 10 complex flowers up to 10cm in diameter, or up to 50 simple flowers in the time available. Finally, you will add a small stamp to the back of each flower as your maker's mark, and to make sure they don't get mixed up before the next session.

Your flowers will be bisque-fired between workshops, and when you return for the second 2-hour workshop the following week, you will decorate your flowers using glazes. Mandy will give you a demonstration of how to attach wire stems or jewellery findings to your flowers to convert them into stakes, a bouquet or brooches, and you will take a small kit with you with enough materials to complete this final stage at home. Your piece will be fired once more at a higher temperature following this second workshop, and finished pieces will be available for collection from Plant Empire a week later.

All levels of experience are welcome for this workshop, and all materials and equipment for the workshop will be supplied. Please note that we don't send workshop reminders, so please be sure to add this event to your calendar as soon as you've registered.

Cost: $200 / $180 (Multi-pass)

Multi-pass discount: Sign up for 2 or more Plant Empire events, or register 2 or more people for the same event, to receive 10% off the ticket price (discount will appear at checkout).
