Kids Ceramic Pets Workshop with Jane du Rand, 10-1pm Monday 24 June & 10-12 noon Wednesday 26 June 2024
Calling all kids! Come along to Plant Empire to join Jane du Rand for this 2-part workshop to make a ceramic sculpture of your favourite animal!
The workshop starts in the first 3-hour session with sculpting your animal from clay. Jane will show you the steps to make an animal sculpture out of clay, and share her tips for creating details like fur or feathers and expressions in order to capture the likeness of the animal. Jane will bring reference material with images of animals for you to create, or you might like to bring your own photos or online images to recreate in the class. Then it's your turn to start sculpting, and you'll have enough time to make a small- to medium-sized sculpture like those shown in the photos.
When you return for the second 2-hour workshop, you will paint your sculpture in fine detail using underglazes and oxides. This is the stage where your sculpture really comes together as colour is applied to the sculpture. Finished pieces will be bisque-fired following the workshop, covered in clear glaze, and then fired for a second time before being available for collection two weeks following the workshop.
All levels of experience are welcome. All materials and equipment for the workshop, including clay and glazes to make the work, will be supplied. Please wear closed shoes and clothes you can get dirty (or an apron). This workshop is targeted kids aged 9-14; however, older kids are most welcome to attend, and younger kids can also attend with an older sibling. Please note that we don't send workshop reminders, so please be sure to add this event to your calendar as soon as you've registered.

About Jane du Rand
Jane du Rand is a ceramic and mosaic artist working from her studio in Ipswich. Born in Durban, South Africa, she has a Bachelor of Architecture Cum Laude from the University of KwaZulu Natal. Jane has run a ceramic studio for the past 20 years and is best known for her large-scale commissioned ceramic and mosaic artworks in public spaces and on public buildings, as well as a great number of private commissions. She has completed projects throughout Southern Africa, and also in France, the Netherlands, Chile, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America. Jane moved from South Africa to Australia at the beginning of 2014 and is now an Australian citizen.
