Spoon Carving Workshop (30 June 2024)
Spoon Carving Workshop with Theresa Darmody: 10–1pm Sunday 30 June 2024.
The perfect wooden spoon is hand carved from beautiful timber and is just the right shape, weight and length for you. Join artist Theresa Darmody for this workshop to learn how to carve your very own perfect wooden spoon.
You will learn a range of hand wood carving techniques using specialised tools to carve a wooden spoon from a piece of raw timber ("blank"). Participants will learn the basics of knife and gouge techniques to carve timber safely. You will also become familiar with different types of timber, and how to identify and work with the timber's grain to achieve different results.
Theresa Darmody is a painter and mixed media artist whose brushes are collecting dust since she caught the wood carving bug five years ago. Her arts practice is now deeply focused on hand carving sculptures and functional pieces objects of beauty that celebrate the natural properties of timber.
All levels of experience welcome: this workshop is suitable for people with little or no carving experience. Closed shoes must be worn for this workshop for safety reasons and, as you will be standing for most of this workshop, comfortable shoes are recommended, as are aprons to protect your clothes. Morning tea will be provided.
