Garden Dweller Workshop with Monte Lupo Arts: 8–29 June 2024.
In this 14-hour workshop held over four weeks in June, you will learn from Monte Lupo Arts to sculpt and decorate your own ceramic Garden Dweller to live in your garden at home.
The photos shown feature the signs of the zodiac: you are welcome to use these designs as inspiration, or personalise your own garden dweller with insignia that is meaningful to you, or let the garden dweller's personality reveal itself to you as you create!
Garden Dwellers sit at around 30-40cm high, and are whimsical sculptures to decorate your home or garden. They differ from the Head Planter workshop that we run with Monte Lupo Arts in being larger in size, as well as having arms and hands, and a mosaic body. They can, however, be made as planters, or to support a vessel (such as a bowl or hat) to serve as a bird bath.
In the first week's 6-hour workshop, you will learn a range of hand-building pottery techniques including coil building, scoring and slipping to make your basic sculpture with arms and hair. You will also sculpt your garden dweller's face and add features like a bird bath or planter along with embellishments like flowers and butterflies. When you return for the second week’s 4-hour class, you will learn about underglaze for bisque ware and how to apply different painting and glazing techniques. Your glazed piece will be fired following this second workshop, ready for you to decorate with mosaic tiles in the third 3-hour workshop. In the final 1-hour workshop, you will grout your mosaic tiles ready to dry and take home.

All levels of experience are welcome for this workshop, and all materials and equipment for the workshop will be supplied. This workshop is suitable adults and children over 10. All Plant Empire workshop presenters involving children are Blue Card holders.
