Jane du Rand’s ceramic and mosaic art combines a range of technical and artistic skills to bring the natural world to life within urban environments, and it is this approach that she brings to her studio classes.
Jane du Rand’s studio classes are an opportunity for students to work on small- to large-scaled ceramic mosaic projects with technical challenges appropriate to your own skill level. Students are encouraged to work to each term’s theme and also have the opportunity to bring their own new or ongoing projects to the class.
Studio Class Format
In 2023, these studio classes will be run across four terms during the year and will combine both structured and unstructured learning components: students will work towards creative and technical exercises set by Jane for half the term time, with the remainder open for students to work on their own ceramic/mosaic projects. Students are also encouraged to take work home to work on and make progress between classes.
Term 1 focuses on ceramic construction and decoration techniques, including slab building, coil building, carving, glazing and firing.
Term 2 focuses on ceramic relief techniques and sculpture, with a particular emphasis on tiles, birds, plants and animals and layered designs.
Term 3 focuses on mosaics and design, including drawing designs, colour and pattern, translation, execution and installation.
Term 4 focuses on artistic voice and style, including ceramic/mosaic studies of the Hermannsburg and Ardmore schools, and ceramic master Bea Jaffray, among others.
While each term has focus on particular technical skills in ceramics or mosaics, students have plenty of unstructured time during term to work on skills outside of that term’s focus, with plenty of guidance and support from Jane.
Each term stands alone, so students can attend just one term, or can attend all terms during the year without duplicating learning content. Students attending all three terms may choose to make a series of small projects linked to each term, or to undertake a major year-long project which incorporates the technical skills learnt during the year. Examples of major projects to work on across the year includes (but is not limited to): making a large ceramic pot which is decorated with ceramic reliefs and mosaic work or making a ceramic mosaic wall art installation.
Studio Class Dates
Each term is 42 hours in total across 6 full days according to the following schedule. Please note that class dates have been chosen around Jane’s production schedule, so are not always in regular (i.e. weekly or fortnightly) intervals. Terms do not align with school terms; however class dates do avoid school holiday periods, wherever possible.
Term 1: 10-5pm Saturday 18 March, 1 April, 22 April, 29 April, 13 May, 20 May.
Term 2: 10-5pm Saturday 27 May, 3 June, 10 June, 17 June, 24 June, 15 July.
Term 3: 10-5pm Saturday 29 July, 5 August, 19 August, 26 August, 2 September, 9 September.
Term 4: 10-5pm Saturday 30 September,14 October, 11 November, 18 November, 2 December, 9 December.
Who Should Attend?
These studio classes are suitable for students with various levels of art experience who are committed to undertaking an extended art training experience. It is not necessary that you have prior experience in either ceramics or mosaics, as classes will cover introductory to advanced skills to suit students’ learning needs.
Materials
You will receive a 10kg bag of clay to work with during the course, and other tools and materials needed for your work in the class (tiles, glazes and underglazes, canvas boards, backing boards, and safety goggles) will be supplied. Additional clay, tiles and glazes will be available for purchase for students wanting to tackle larger projects or continue work at home. A fee is applicable for firing ceramic pieces based on their size at $12/kg for bisque firing and $12/kg for glaze firing. Students are required to bring a notebook or artist’s journal to class to sketch ideas, make notes and record glazing and under glazing samples and experiments.
About Jane du Rand
Jane du Rand is a ceramic and mosaic artist working from her studio in the Station Road Creative Precinct at Yeerongpilly. Born in Durban, South Africa, she has a Bachelor of Architecture Cum Laude from the University of KwaZulu Natal. Jane has run a ceramic studio for the past 20 years and is best known for her large-scale commissioned ceramic and mosaic artworks in public spaces and on public buildings, as well as a great number of private commissions. She has completed projects throughout Southern Africa, and also in France, the Netherlands, Chile, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America.
In 2003, Jane won the public art competition at the new Constitutional Court Building in Johannesburg with her proposal to clad the 18 foyer columns with ceramics based on indigenous trees. In 2009, she was nominated as a finalist for the Mercedes Benz Award, South African Art Projects in Public Spaces. In 2017, Jane won the Best Of Show award for her sculpture at the Ipswich Art Awards; and in 2018, won second prize for her sculpture entry.
Jane moved from South Africa to Australia at the beginning of 2014 and is now an Australian citizen.
