Mosaic Tile Workshop (30 September & 21 October 2023)

Mosaic Tile Workshop with Monte Lupo Arts: 12–2pm Saturday 30 September &  1–3pm Saturday 21 October 2023.

In this 2-part workshop held over two weeks (held three weeks apart), you will learn from Monte Lupo Arts to shape and decorate your own ceramic mosaic tiles. You will be able to use your mosaic tiles to complete your own creative projects, such as the mosaic plates shown in the photos, or to adorn your mosaic bird bath if you are joining that parallel workshop at Plant Empire. 

In the first week's 2-hour workshop, you will learn how to prepare and roll out clay to make your ceramic tiles. You then have the option of shaping tiles entirely by hand, using cutters or moulds, or sculpting detailed 3-dimensional reliefs. You can make as many tiles as you can manage in two hours, and are limited only by your imagination, the detail of your designs, and how fast you can work. You can expect to product around one square metre of tiles in this workshop, but experienced students may be able to produce 2-3 square metres in the time available. So that we don't mix up students' tiles, you can either initial the back of each tile or bring along a stamp or other object to give them a unique identifier (your maker's mark!). 

In the second workshop session held a week later, you will paint your tiles using your choice of underglazes and/or glazes. You can choose to use single colours for each tile, or detailed designs - again, limited only by your imagination, design and time. Your tiles will be fired following this second workshop, ready for you to take home or use in the mosaic planter workshop.

All levels of experience are welcome for this workshop, and all materials and equipment for the workshop will be supplied. The images have been chosen to show examples of tiles that you can make in this workshop and how they can be used in mosaic work: you will be making tiles only in this workshop, not a completed mosaic work. This workshop is suitable adults and children over 10. All Plant Empire workshop presenters involving children are Blue Card holders.
